Psst … wanna join a book club? I’m trying something new for the new year: an online book club! We’ll be creating a Facebook group to discuss a novel together, and then possibly meet in person at an event featuring the author of that novel. More info will be coming about how you can join. Might be fun? Let’s try it!

First order of business: Let’s pick a book. I’ve chosen three potential novels, all of which I think would make for good reading and rich discussion — and all of which have an author scheduled to visit Seattle in the next few months. (Also a factor: these books are all well-known and not quite brand-new, which I’m hoping will make it easier to obtain library copies.) Here they are:

• “An American Marriage” by Tayari Jones (2018). An Oprah’s Book Club selection, Jones’ novel is the story of a love triangle, in which a newlywed couple is ripped apart when the husband is falsely accused of a crime.

• “Warlight” by Michael Ondaatje (2018). From the author of “The English Patient,” this novel begins in London during late World War II, as two children are left in the care of a mysterious lodger.

• “Swing Time” by Zadie Smith (2016). Smith’s novel follows two girls, who meet in a London tap-dance class in 1982, through adulthood.

Cast your vote by Jan. 31 and we’ll go from there! Looking forward to reading with you.
