Greg Gilbert began his photography career in high school in his hometown of Olympia, Washington. He attended Art Center School in Los Angeles and the University of Washington. He worked for two years at the Olympia Olympian before moving on to Seattle where he worked as a photographer at the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. In 1967, he was hired by the Seattle Times, where at 21 he was the youngest photographer on staff. In 1970, he was named photographer of the year for West Coast Region of the National Press Photographers Association. He was a Pultizer finalist, along with other Seattle Times photographers, for coverage of the WTO riots in 1999. He has five grown children, three boys and two girls, and four grandchildren. A longtime boater, he lives in Salmon Bay near Ballard on a historic 1926-vintage, 46-foot classic wooden yacht, the Winifred.
