A 23-year-old woman was shot and killed by King County sheriff’s deputies at her home on Muckleshoot tribal lands Friday night, the sheriff’s office said.

Deputies arrived to the home shortly after 6:30 p.m. to investigate a report of a suicidal, armed woman with two small children, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

No one answered the door at the home in the 15800 block of Southeast 382nd Place when deputies knocked, the release says.

Two deputies then went inside to check on the unidentified woman and children and found her with a handgun. Both deputies fired, the release says, striking the woman at least once. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

The exact circumstances that led to the shooting remain unknown.

King County sheriff’s Sgt. Cindi West said the 23-year-old woman was the mother of the children, who are under the age of 5. As of late Friday, they were with Child Protective Services, she said.

Of the deputies who fired, one is an eight-year veteran who works on the reservation, the release says. The other deputy has three years experience.

Both have been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated, per department policy.

No details on the investigation were immediately available.

King County Medical Examiner’s Office will formally identify the woman.

Friday’s incident marks the fourth deadly officer-involved shooting in South King County since the beginning of September.

Last week, a 38-year-old man was fatally shot by Kent police who were at his home to serve a search warrant in a fraud investigation. Investigators said he had a handgun.

On Oct. 8, Federal Way police shot and killed a 21-year-old man who they said charged officers with a knife after threatening members of his family.

And in September, a 64-year-old man was fatally shot by an Auburn police officer, who said the man approached him and another person with a metal pipe while the officer investigated a report of vandalism.
