For many Western Washington areas, temperatures hit record highs Thursday.

And meteorologists say the heat will stay through Friday.

Thursday’s daytime high of 91 degrees at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport surpassed the previous record of 87 degrees set in 1982 on Aug. 25, according to the National Weather Service.

The areas of Olympia, Quillayute, Hoquiam and Bellingham broke area records, too, with temperatures in the mid-80s to lower 90s, the service says.

On Friday, meteorologists are predicting 91 degrees at Sea-Tac, which would match the day’s record set there in 1986, according to the service.

It hasn’t rained much since mid-July, and those dry conditions have put the region at greater risk of wildfires, especially in places with offshore winds.

A ban on campfires at lands protected by the state Department of Natural Resources, including beaches in the seashore Conservation Area, remains in effect through Sept. 30. Officials Thursday issued a ban on recreational fires in unincorporated areas of Thurston County, too. That ban lasts through Saturday.

A heat advisory remains in effect across the central Puget Sound through the southwest interior and lower Chehalis valley until Friday evening.

But it won’t last.

Forecasters expect temperatures to drop this weekend. Saturday’s highs won’t likely top the mid-70s, according to the service.
