Explosive ordnance experts have determined that a suspicious package left inside the gate of the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard near the ferry terminal in Bremerton is not an explosive threat.
Bremerton police and ordnance experts from Naval Base Kitsap-Bremerton urged the public to stay away from the area of the ferry terminal earlier Thursday while they investigated a suspicious package that, according to police, “appears to be an explosive device.”
Naval Base Kitsap spokesman Jake Chappelle said that Navy technicians determined the package is not a threat but authorities were examining it for hazardous materials.
The naval base said the package was located within its perimeter. They said some personnel were asked to shelter in place.
The device was discovered at 11:45 a.m.
The incident interrupted ferry service from Seattle to Bremerton. At 3:08 p.m., the U.S. Coast Guard cleared the ferry terminal and the Seattle-Bremerton routes resumed service.
Authorities said the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and local law enforcement would investigate the incident.
